Personal Statement On Social Identity Essay - 1491 Words

Social identity is most commonly explained as a person’s awareness of who they are according to groups they assign themselves with (social class, teams, family, etc.). When I think about my own social identity I ask myself, â€Å"What defines me?† Social identities allow us to have a sense of belonging in a hectic world. For my own social identity I know that I am a white young adult. I am able to acknowledge that I am female and I also identify as a woman. I practice Christianity, am a heterosexual and would classify myself as middle to upper class. Additionally, I am able bodied. These particular attributes I identify myself with I think of most frequently. If I were to rank them from most thought about to least the order would go as so, young adult, woman, a female, white, heterosexual, upper to middle class, able bodied and lastly Christian. Identifying myself as a female and a women as well allows me to see recognize the differences between men and women. This is becoming more and more relevant to my everyday life. I think that is because I will be graduating in May, and finding a job will be challenging. Market Segmentation to Sell Dangerous Products †MyAssignmenthelp

Question: Discuss about the Market Segmentation to Sell Dangerous Products. Answer: Introduction: This particular advertisement belongs to the category of social media because the advertising has been done using the social media platform face book. This advertisement is of Mens shoes that has been advertised on face book. This advertisement targets men, the marketers and the advertisers aim here seems to be advertising formal shoes for the men. This shoe is especially for the office going purposes and for other formal events. This advertisement is not very effective as it is not attracttive, an advertisement has to be attractive so that it create interst among the target audience and influence their buying behavior. There should be interesting catch phrases, images so that the target audience finds the advertisement interesting. is Journal on social media Advertising Social Media is one of the most popular advertisements platforms for advertisements now days. It successfully targets many audiences in a very less expenditure. Very less effort and time is consumed for social media advertising campaigns. One of the most important social media advertising using facebook, twitter, inttagram and other sites is that the marketers get the feedback of the advertising campaigns in a fraction of time. This platform is very easily accessible by both the marketers and the potential customers. There are certain disadvantages of the social media advertising. It is very difficult to measure the actual impact on the audience because there are many people who do not intend to buy the products of services of any particular brand but respond to the brand advertising campaign. Therefore, it often happens that the feedback might b e constructive and positive but that cannot but one cannot conclude that they will be motivated further to take the buying action. The feed back from the customers cannot be totally relied because it becomes easy for all the viewers to give feedback. They will take the opportunity to give feedback but how much they are convinced for buying that product is difficult to tell, because they must be responding to other advertisements of the competitors, so the audience becomes very speculative in choosing the brand (Alhabash, Mundel and Hussain 2017). Business-to-Business advertising This advertisement belongs to the category of B2B advertising, because it is an industrial product and most of industrial products are directly sold to the business and not much levels are involved within in the distribution channel of this kind of products. To increase the brand awareness- This is a prime objective of B2B marketing. However, in the context of B2B marketing is to provide vast information of the product through the business report, social media and the interaction. To increase the lead generation- However, by using the social networking sites the B2B marketers increases the lead generation. To increase the engagement-To increase the engagement of the customers within the business in order to provide them valuable information is another objective of B2B marketing. It is an advertisement of hydraulic that is mostly used in factories in the field of engineering. The target audience of this particular product is the industries and factories where the engineering work is done and the factories that require hydraulic in their engineering processes. The advertisement only has product specification. There is very less creativity used in the advertisement, the advertisers have used the color blue and white, the color choice is very good making the advertisement simple and all the information is also relevant. However, increasing of the creativity in this advertisement process as for example distribution of product information to the individuals through unique process will be beneficial to improve this process. B2B advertising journal B2B advertising often lacks creativity, since they are sold to the industrial buyers the market focus mostly on giving the product related information. The focus is very little on creativity. This is particular the aspects of B2B advertising that seems to be different from from the other advertising techniques. It is a very negative thing about business-to-business advertising. Advertisements are generally made creative so that it can attract the customers, but if the advertisements are not creative it would not be able to create the interest of the customers. The common belief about business-to-business advertising is that, since it is sold to other business and it is an industrial product, there is no requirement for creativity. Industrial customers should not be treated differently. There is so much competition in Business to Business adverting as well, so if the advertisers are not creative then there are chances that they might not be able to achieve their advertising objectives (Baack et al., 2016). This is an advertisement for a cause, so this particular advertisement belongs to the category of non-profit advertisement. The aim of this advertisement is not to generate profit, but rather to create awareness about the cause. In this advertisement the cause here is for the children who cannot walk, due a disorder, Duchene Muscular Dystrophy, this disorder is very common among the children which does not allow them them to enjoy their lives like other normal children and they cannot go up stairs. The advertisement is good and would be appealing; since it is a social cause advertisement it will successfully achieve the objectives of the advertisements. However, the advertisement could have been displayed in any other way; the picture used here is of a child smiling, if one does not read the caption given below it would be very difficult to say what kind of adverting is it. So the advertisers could have put a picture so that it becomes easier for the audience to just see the picture and know what is the cause for the advertisement. The caption given below has too much of medical jargon which might be difficult for the audience to understand, so this could have been simply portrayed by only giving the description about the symptoms and how it affects the child. Journal on Non- profit advertising A lot of companies now under their corporate social responsibilities fight for causes that might be social cause for any other diseases, they use cause advertising techniques for creating awareness about the cause they are fighting. It is not for profit, so the organization name is not focused too much but the cause is the focus. Cause advertising should be appealing so that it makes the audience aware about the cause, the pictures used for cause advertising should be very appealing. The corporations that run successful csr campaigns have advertisements that make the audience emotional, emotional appeal is very much required; the picture should speak a lot compelling the audience to read further about the cause. Since the audience is the public, the advertisers of cause advertising use a very simple language so that they can read it and understand. If the advertisement is related to some kind of disease, then the advertisers generally do not use medical jargons, that often confuses t he audience and might happen that many audience would simply lose interest in further reading the about the cause, so medical jargons are generally avoided (Pomering 2017). This advertising belongs to the global advertising category, the advertising is of a Chinese airlines, where the advertisers are promoting a Chinese airlines and appealing the audience to travel through their airlines. The target audience here is the public who like to travel. From the advertisement it is not clear that what is the subject of advertising. The advertisement has depicted a family, which is very good as the intention of the advertisers here is very clear that they are convibcing the people with families, which they can also travel through this advertisement, as it is one of the best airlines for all. Though the drawback of the advertisement is that the picture of a Aeroplane in the background is very small, which might the audience who would look for the first time. The picture should have been slightly bigger so that the audience knows the thing, idea or service that is being advertised in this particular advertisement. Since it is an global advertisement the language of the country is used, but for the people who do not know Chinese and happen to see this advertisement, they will be confused. Advertisements should not have boundaries they should be clear enough that the audience irrespective of the country they belong should understand it (Ling 2017). Journal on global advertising This journal focuses on the reaction of the audience in global advertising. A experiment was conducted to evaluate the reaction of the customers in culturally congruent images used in advertising, which is the mix of global and local cultural elements that are used in advertising. Focusing the attention on persuasion knowledge perspective the argument of the author is that the advertisement images are incongruence when it comes to a globalized market. Communication in a globalized market in China, the consumers use persuasion knowledge, they use the belief they have regarding the tactics use by the agent or the marketer that is used to persuade the audience. This results in positive attitude towards the advertisements, the knowledge of the consumers help in creation of positive attitude towards the advertisements ad might also help the consumers to in later stage create interest in gathering information regarding the product and might even buy it. The following research helps in stud ying and understanding the role of global and local advertising in a globalized market. It was found that in the globalized market, like china, the audience uses their beliefs and persuasion knowledge (Crawford 2017). This advertising is advertising for an industrial product. This particular advertisement is an example of bad advertisement. The reason for selecting this advertisement as bad advertisement is that there are very less information about the product has been used in this advertisement. The information that is available in the advertisement is very vague and hardly any information can be taken from this advertisement. This advertisement could have been more clear and creative so that the audience is able to know what product is being advertised. The picture used for this advertisement does not much relate with the product (Carlton and Perloff 2015). This advertisement can be taken for an example for good example. This is a cause advertisement where the ill effects of smoking have not been given in full detail yet it is very clear that it is fatal. The message is short and yet very persuasive. The best thing about the advertisement is that, it has been used in a billboard where it is available to all the people of the city. The location is perfect for the cause advertising; all will see it. Another thing is that no audience stands and read advertisements on bill boards, they see it while they pass, so the message should be short and yet effective and this particular advertisement has kept this thing in mind (Hackbarth Silvestri and Cosper 2015). According to the stage five the above advertisement is considered as the bad advertisement as it is less informative. However, a good advertisement always includes more information, from which a person get clear idea about the product or service. Therefore, it is important for an organization to use proper way during the advertisement process (Carlton and Perloff 2015). Hence, it is important for the organization to give detail information regarding the service during the advertisement as it will give a clear idea regarding the service to the customers. The above advertisement is an example of good advertisement as it includes a depth information about the service. However, the main difference of the good and bad advertismen is the information related to the product or service. However, if the customer get proper idea about the product or service through the advertisement then they are easily attracted towards the service. The above advertisment includes the product category, product featurs, contact details of the organization. Product feature is an important part of the advertisment as through this the customers get a preliminary idea regrding the service and product (Crawford 2017). Based on this they take decision about their purchase. Hence, it is justified that this advertisment is an improved version of the previous advertisment as it gives a clear idea about the service that can easily attract the customer concentration. Thank You After Interview Email Despite the dour news reports, many companys are hiring! This article will help you write a thank you after interview email that helps you get the job. After a lengthy search process, two candidates qualified for the final interview with two vice-presidents for a lucrative sales position with an excellent company. After the interview, the vice-presidents were equally impressed with both candidates and unsure who to hire. Then, they received the candidate's thank you after interview email, and one was immediately hired and the other immediately excluded. Let's look at the thank you after interview email and examine what worked and what did not. (Note: The ideal candidate would demonstrate both a proven strong sales track record AND have the personality to build sincere business relationships with established company clients. Up until these emails were received, they appeared equally qualified.) I am a top sales performer eminently comfortable with all aspects of sales, and sales management. I am even more excited about this position after meeting with you and learning it requires diligent focus on relationship building. This is the area of sales I most enjoy and cultivate. When you speak with my references, I'm sure they'll attest to my genuine interest in learning about their businesses and our long-standing relationships. They needed a highly skilled sales professional which implicitly requires competitiveness, hustle and focus, and he met that requirement. Personal Statements on Historical American Events Statement

Statements on Historical American Events - Personal Statement Example The corporations started accumulating large reserves and issuing new stocks and this contributed to the stock market crash. The government has undertaken measures to restructure the corporate world through ensuring corporations are run by hired management and ensuring ordinary citizens have a chance of owning a stake through buying shares in listed companies (Zakim and Kornblith 78). The capitalism influence has been curtailed by organized labor since trade unions bargain for minimum wages and better welfare of workers. This has been occasioned by various laws that govern employment practices and more enlightened workforce. The American capitalism has transformed to cater for all stakeholders in the economy including shareholders, employees, lenders, suppliers, government, and society. The management is responsible for ensuring efficiency and balancing the competing interests of various interested groups such as shareholders and employees. The modern management practices have a sense of responsibility towards the society and general public and companies avoid activities that may harm the environment such as pollution. Accordingly, various laws aim at enhancing perfect competition and limiting the influence of cartels and monopolies. Although the recent financial crisis identified some loopholes in corporate governance, measures have been undertaken to ensure that capitalism promotes ownership of property, good business governance and social responsibility. Capitalism has not hindered the freedoms enjoyed by the citizens. The scope of government is limited in a free market economy and its primary roles include safeguarding private contracts, ensuring law and order and fostering competitive markets. The government is also diversified since state governments provide basic amenities such as schools and sewage disposal depending on their by-laws and thus ensuring

Research for Career Path for BSN(only) Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

For Career Path for BSN(only) - Research Paper Example The lack of appropriate knowledge means that nurses will, at all times, be lacking in certain areas where they are expected to perform the best. Thus, student nurses require long-term motivational aspects that will make them enjoy their profession and help people more in the future (Buerhaus, Auerbauch, and Staiger, 2009). Many who have upgraded their Registered Nurse diplomas to a bachelor’s degree have cited an improved perception of their work and an eventful stint at their work settings; the bachelor’s degree just adds the required confidence to the nurse as a way of ensuring that they perform their duty as expected. However these nurses are quickly running out of options in their career path. Nurses provide at least 80% of direct patient contact, and thus expect to be trained well and awarded career options that will serve them for long-term benefits and not for the short-term goals alone (Marsland and Hickey, 2003). Rewards have limited most people from entering t his education level and have thus led to attrition. However, this report will seek to search for three career options that a graduate holding a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) can choose. Career Options A BSN prepared registered nurse (RN) has several options from which they can choose. For the purpose of this report, the three choices are public health nurses, military service nurses and long-term care nurses (Buerhaus, Auerbauch, and Staiger, 2009). These choices are entrusted to them because it is believed that the knowledge they hold at this level can be used for national service. There are reports that show that the more knowledgeable a nurse is, the higher the chances for their patients to survive. This is because they have a greater awareness that is helpful in the increase of a substantial survival advantage. It is also statistically proven from a research carried out by Metz, Fouad and Ihle-Helledy (2009) that at least 25% of all BSN graduates interviewed want to pursu e a career in faculty role and 76% wanted to further their education to fit into the national grid. However, even as BSN they have a high chance of being recruited into the workforce and serve as nurses in the long-term care centers, as public health nurses or military nurses as they would prefer. Why These Choices It is projected that by the year 2025, the number of nurses required to serve the public will have increased to at least 1 million. The growing number of baby boomers has necessitated a review of the way nurses are registered given that at least 260,000 registered nurses will be required to cater for this increase (Buerhaus, Auerbauch, and Staiger, 2009). Further, an increase in the number of chronically ill currently placed at over 100 million, means that the current number of nurses is strained and the ill are not receiving the care they require. The increasing complexities in the medical world also require knowledgeable people in different areas who can multitask and h elp to alleviate any backlogs that may arise while ensuring the safety of the patients. Despite this increased need for nurses it is also reported by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) that a large number of qualified undergraduate baccalaureate applicants are being turned down annually (Fang et al., 2011). They claim that the limited number of facilities as well as an inadequate number of faculties in the nursing field has limited the number of

MGT499 - Strategic Management Mod 1 Case Assignment Essay

MGT499 - Strategic Management Mod 1 Case Assignment - Essay Example 82% of American households have made at least one purchase at Wal-Mart during an annum. Company’s expansions are very aggressive where there is a new store opening every day. However analyzing the growth and profitability trends over the years, there is a declining trend in terms of same store performance which is currently covered up by the aggressive new outlet openings. This paper aims to assess whether the company’s mission and objectives are well aligned with its stake holder needs that will allow the long term sustaining of the company’s success. Wal-Mart’s mission is â€Å"Saving People Money so They Can Live Better† This is the philosophy of the Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton who stated that â€Å"If we work together, we’ll lower the cost of living for everyone†¦we’ll give the world an opportunity to see what it’s like to save and have a better life.† This is the driving principle of the company’s low cost-low price business model. The company claims that their core principles of 1) respect for the individuals, 2) Service to the customers and 3) Striving for excellence has been the cornerstones of their success as they move forward (Wal-Mart Stores Website 2008). While Wal-Mart has benefited from this business mission of offering every day low prices over the past decade, the trends indicate that the competition has intensified in the market and the competitors have streamlines their own operations, benchmarking against Wal-Mart. They have managed to increase their internal efficiencies and cut back on cost structures, allowing them to bring their prices closer to Wal-Mart but offer more value additions such as greater customer service, better product quality and greater stores ambiance that has increased their appeal to the middle and upper income group strata. While the appeal of the low price offer has kept legions of low income customers loyal to the

Different Levels Of Involvement In Social Responsibility Business Essay

Different Levels Of Involvement In Social Responsibility Business Essay A socially responsible business practices are where the corporation adopts and conducts discretionary business practices and investments that support social causes to improve community well-being and protect the environment. Here are three levels of its involvement: Social responsibility is the businesss obligation to pursue long term goals that helps the society. It goes beyond legal and economic requirements and view the business as a moral agent. Social obligation is the businesss obligation to meet its economic and legal responsibilities where it pursues social goals only when they contribute to economic goals. Social responsiveness is the capacity of the firm to conform to changing societal condition, where it tries to satisfy social needs in line with social norms. As might be expected, most initiatives related to socially responsible practices relate to altering internal procedures and policies, such as those related to product offerings, facility design, manufacturing, assembly, and employee support. An initiative can also be reflected in external reporting of consumer and investor information and demonstrated by making provisions for customer access and privacy, and can be taken into consideration when making decisions regarding hiring practices and facility and plant location, common activities include the following: Designing facilities, developing process improvement, select supplier, provide full disclosure, Developing programs to support employees well-being, measuring, tracking and reporting, providing increased access for disabled populations, projecting privacy of consumer information,Kotler.FLee.N (2005). Figure1: corporate social responsibility process. 3.2 The stages progression of an organizations social responsibilities -Promote stockholders interest by looking forward to minimize cost and maximize profit. -Following all laws and regulations and feeling obligation to satisfy other societal needs. -Managers to agree their responsibility to employees and focus on human resource affair and improving condition, to expand responsibilities to other stockholders include faire prices, good quality of product and services, safe product, and good supplier relationship. -Finally managers to feel responsibility to whole society by trying to advance the public good, preserving the environment, promoting social justice, and then support social and cultural activities. 3.3 characteristics of the social responsibility. The social responsibility major consideration is ethical. It focuses on ends. It emphasis is obligations. and Make it decision framework a long term. 3.4 The Greening of Management. The greening of management is the identification of the nearly link between an organizations decisions and activity and its collision on the natural environment, its resulted from highly visible ecological and environmental disaster. The organization go green once it shades of green shows the different approaches that an organization may take in which: Legal approach: it follows the legal obligations. Market approach: organization behave to the customers environmental preference. Stakeholders approach: organizations chooses to respond to multiples demand made by stakeholders. Activist approach: looks for ways to respect and preserve the earth and its natural resources. Terry.J 4.0 Ethics. Ethics is concerned with the study of morality and standards of conduct of reason to clarify specific rules and principles that determine right and wrong for a situation. It can be a code that you follow and live by. 4.1 ethical Leadership. The ethical leadership is the direction and example presented by senior management in terms of what is considered to be acceptable practice within an organization must inform and shape the behaviour of others. It is a leaders role to define the vision and core values of an organization. Fisher.CLovell.A(2009) Focus on the personal qualities, attitudes and mind-sets which managers need to learn and which will in turn drive improvement in business performance. Should become embedded into the education, training and development of managers and staff, and are tool for assessing performance in all business functions. Ibid Figure2: Factors that affect ethical behaviour. 4.2 Ethics Management. The business ethics management is the direct attempt to formally or informally manage ethical issues or problems through specific policies, practices and programmes. There are numerous management activities that could be regarded as aspects of business management, Some of which: Mission or values statement. Codes of ethics. Reporting/advice channels. Risk analysis and management. Ethics managers, officers and committees. Ethics consultant. Ethics education and training. Auditing, accounting and reporting. Crane.A Matten.D (2007) 4.3 Morality in Ethics. Morality is the concerned with the norms, values, and believe enclose in social processes which defines right and wrong for a person or community. Whereas the key practical direction for ethical behaviour tend to be codified in the negotiated agree framework of businesses. Morality is social attitude that distinguish between right and wrong in the human society. Distinguish morality in this way is not making an affirmation about what is objectively right or wrong, but only referring to what is examined right or wrong by people. 4.4 Mission or Values Statements. Mission or values statements are generate statement of corporate aims, beliefs, values. Such statements frequently include social goals of one kind or another and may often specify a commitment to operate in an ethical fashion. Example: the british retailer Mark and Spencer aim to be the most trusted retailer, wherever the trade by demonstrating a clear sense of social responsibility and consistency in their decision making and behaviour. Codes of ethics are explicit outline of what conduct is the desired and expected of employees from an ethical point of view within a certain organization, profession, or industry. Ibid Figure3: purposes of shared values. To develop a shared values managers are in charge for shaping the organization so that its norms, ideas, and values appeal strongly to employees. To create a good corporation of values statement one should: 1.Involve everyone in the company. 2.Allow customizing of the values by individual department. 3.Expect and accept employee resistance. 4.Keep the statement short. 5.Avoid trivial statements. 6.Leaves out religious references. 7.Change it. 8.Live it. A.Farnham(1993)state your values: hold the hot air,fortune,p117-24 5.0 Matalan Matalan is one of the UKs leading clothing and home wares retailers offering prepared fashion and home goods at up to half the similar high street price. 5.1 Matalan social responsible and ethics. As one of the UKs ten largest retailers of clothing, Matalan takes seriously its responsibility to provide its customers with clothing products that have been produced ethically. Whilst decided on ensuring its position as a provider of high quality excellent value products, this must not be at the dignity or expense of individuals with whom they sources. As social and ethical compliance is paramount in their partnership with suppliers and is seen as an obligation to be fulfilled on behalf of their customers. Matalan founded necessary to go beyond a simple customer supplier relationship, and accept the responsibility of improving the working conditions of their supplier workforce in partnership with their suppliers to improve conditions and quality of working life. To achieve that Matalan have invested a lot in recruiting people with many years experience in the industry who are on hand to work closely with suppliers at all levels of people on improving their quality of working practices and conditions. 5.2 Audit policy in Matalan Matalan have an ethical audit policy with their full time auditors, they regularly visit locations where their manufacture is import. They have launch over 650 audits in the past three years. These audits are directed in a good spirit of co-operation with management, supervisors and factory floor employees. Additionally they possess independent auditors with local language skills and they have bring more than 85 Audits in the last three years. This powerful activity has resulted in over 1100 positive curing actions being completed during the audit period. Over this past year a number of unexpected factory visits have been made in order to satisfy their own integrity. . http://www.matalan.co.uk Every article of clothing factory used for Matalan is audited, and must conform to the below: 5.2.1 Government. Every Factory must at the very least abide by local government laws on: Basic minimum wage. Over time. Minimum working age. Hours of work. 5.2.2 Social. All factory owners and Management allow and support: Freedom Of Association. Collective Bargaining. Independent Works Committees. Working to paying a realistic living Wage. Complaints procedure. Matalan is achieve to complying with all regulatory and legislative requirements in all aspects of the business and will undertake where practicable to ensure that its contractors and suppliers also comply. The company views this as a minimum basic with awe to environmental issues. ibid 6.0 My suggestion to Matalan. An ethical policy should be set up to set standards and give guidelines regarding the way advance Promotions should operate in Ethically. It is useful to hold this set of basis values and approaches to the method of running business on a daily basis. The ethical policies focuses around this key areas: 6.1 Employees. Promotion values of employees as a key resource, a good employee communication, involvement and responsibility both individual and team could be for central importance. Giving an equal opportunity to every employee for personal recognition, regardless of personal background or culture belief, and also provide salary without exploitation. executives must set a best example. honesty and integrity must be first concern, executives must have an open door policy and welcome suggestions and care from employees. This to allow employees to feel comfortable discussing any issues and will bright executives to concerns within the work force. executives must reveal any conflict of interests regard their position. 6.2 Customer. Everyone must play a part in providing efficiency and quality to customers. Set Promotions believes that honesty in dealings with customers is necessary for a sustained and successful business relationship. Personal network, helpful and responsive action are aspects of the service to provide to establish long term relations with our customers. 6.3 Supplier. Promotions should aim to develop relationships with suppliers based on common trust and all dealings should be directed in a professional manner at all times. Also undertake to pay suppliers on time and concur to agreed terms. All supplier relationships should determined against feedback and Quality Counts standards given to suppliers on a time basis. 6.4 Community. Promotions seek to insure agreement with legislation affecting its operations. Matalan will have to look for how to serve and support the community where it functions by providing services profitably and efficiently, and by giving good employment opportunities and work conditions. They should take into account the concerns of the immense community including national and local interests. In particular, Matalan should accept a chosen local charity and essay to augment money outside of business interests for a good act. Matalan might occur some problem if this suggestion is adapt such Resistance of employees to the new norms. Difficulties of employee and customers in getting used to the new style. Conflict between employees and managers due to new rules. Conclusion. Overall, some basic models of social responsibility have been introduced briefly. Hence, a general idea about social responsibility should be achieved and ethically. Moreover, the benefit of utilising social responsibility successfully is clear so that is strongly recommended that Matalan should achieved at least a basic task of managing its social responsibility in order to lead the organization to success.

I Am Committed to Becoming a Historian :: Statement Purpose College Admissions

I Am Committed to Becoming a Historian As a Ph.D. student in U.S. history, I would like to continue to explore the intersections of culture and economics in U.S. history, especially as they relate to working-class life and consumption. Although I am now committed to becoming a historian, my academic background has been quite varied. Disillusioned with the often reductionist truths of physical science, I transferred from the School of Engineering to State College after my first year. As an undergraduate, I not only majored in history, but also concentrated in mathematics, especially as it related to economics. For a year, I acted as an economic research assistant, and, following that, I worked on a joint project with the Federal Reserve Bank and the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) doing empirical research in labor economics. During the summer after my junior year, I received a research grant from Columbia, the Edwin Robbins Prize, for my senior thesis: "New York Organized Labor and Prohibition Resistance: The 'No Beer, No Work' Movement of 1919." A forgotten moment in labor history, it was a fascinating intersection of culture, gender, and class, examining the untidy boundary between "economic" and "social" life. Some local trade-unionists co-opted a catchy slogan, "No Beer, No Work," with the intent of fomenting a national general strike, attempting to save the saloon, galvanize class consciousness, and lead workers into a labor party. The strike more than failed; it never occurred. However, teasing out the relationships between the primary documents excited me like nothing I had ever done before. Though I continued to work at the Federal Reserve the following year, I knew the historian's methods, and not the economist's, were what I wanted to pursue in my graduate work. This year I received a Fulbright Scholarship to research working-class history at the University of Toronto. Presently, my research centers on the rise of Canadian nationalism in Toronto within U.S.-dominated unions after WWII. I examine how anti-Communist discourses restricted and/or enabled nationalist movements within the union hierarchy, and how that affected transnational power relations and local economic/political action. My abstract is under consideration for a conference on transnationalism, Crossing Borders, to take place in February at the University of Toronto. I also plan to present a paper, based on my senior thesis, on working-class resistance to Prohibition at the "New Frontiers in Graduate History" conference at York University in March.

Adolescence and Adulthood

Adolescence can be defined as a transional stage that encompasses changes in the mental and physical domains of human development which occur between childhood and adulthood. This transition is composed of social, biological and psychological changes. The psychological or biological changes are believed to be the most easiest to detect and to measure objectively. Adolescence is also believed to be a very crucial stage of life where adolescents are confronted by very highly changing situations. They become moody and ever stressed by the enormous changes occurring in their lives. Majority of these changes are observed in their sexual behavior following the commencement of puberty (Huston, Ripke, 2006, p.16). Changes also do occur at large in their social behavior with adolescents taking more time to spend with their peers as opposed to their parent something that was common in the previous stage. It is a period of crucial decision making about their lives. It is a time they get to know wh ich courses they take, which subjects to pursue, and which university join.According to Erikson’s psychosocial theory, adolescence is a stage of emotional up evils which stems from emotionally disturbed adolescents. According to him adolescents typically under go a period of identity diffusion which encompasses strong feelings of uncernity. At this period, adolescents desire to achieve a sense of identity. That is a state of being, feeling at home in one’s body and a sense of understanding where one is heading to with inward assuredness anticipated with a lot of recognition from others who count in their lives. However, adolescents find it hard to accomplish all this because of the on going rapid social and biological changes which are equally disturbing in the process of drawing decisions about life (Kroger, 2006, p.43).In this context adolescents are said to be typically undergoing identity crisis a period of mental confusion about who they are or where they are headin g to. According to Erickson it is important for adolescents to undergo this stage for it enables them to resolve their identity issues allowing them move on towards forming stable adult identities. The uncertainties or diffusions experienced by adolescents occur in four different patterns.First is the intimacy stage where adolescents become afraid of giving their commitments to others in fear of losing identity. The second stage is the diffusion of time a period that is filled with disbelief   with the possibility that time may come with different changes and yet violent and fearful. The third stage is the diffusion of industry which basically involves an inability to concentrate towards one activity or rather an enormous energy directed towards one single activity (Craig, 1992, p.28). The final stage in is the negative identity which is characterized by a snobbish or a scornful hostility towards the duties offered as proper and desirable by ones family and community.According to E rikson, these changes take different roots in both boys and girls. Boys develop a sense of identity a bit earlier than girls. This difference is attributed to the fact that girls’ identity is dependent on their social status (Craig, 1992, p.69).Eventual casual examinations explain that adults vary enormously from adolescents in the kind of paths taken in life. Majority of these differences occur as a result of changes in the levels of motivation, interest and personalities of individual or rather because of unexpected or unwanted life events. However, most adults initiate more close life friends than adolescents, have jobs to attend to, have children to care for and this explains that they have more common themes to share in life. Therefore, adulthood is a composition of several life themes that help describe the common developmental milestones in adulthood. In this view, Erikson also identified four levels that cover the childhood stage and further divided life during adolesce nce and adulthood into four other stages with each stage carrying its own developmental crisis (Zanden, 1978, p.51).  According to him, each stage brings forth a negative or positive outcome. Those who experience negative outcomes find it hard to resolve conflicts occurring in succeeding stages. At adolescent, majority of individuals strive to overcome role confusion and fight for a sense of identity. At this point attention is focused on peers. At early adulthood most adults begin to commit themselves to intimacy and love relationships while others develops a sense of isolation with social focus being focused on establishing friendship. At middle adulthood, adults begin to take up responsibility by propagating their own generation to care for and they also extend their concerns to caring for others in society at large (Kroger, 2006, p.103). Their focus at this stage is based on productivity and social work. Those who don’t achieve this become self –centred or stagnat ed.Erikson refers these two extremities as stagnation versus generativity.Generativity in this context is used to refer to those with interest in establishing and guiding the next generation. This stage is later followed by a stage of self evaluation to gauge how successful one was. It begins with the onset of old age and focus is on humankind. ReferenceCraig, G (1992). Human Development. Career Episode Civil Essays

Career Episode Civil Essays Career Episode Civil Essay Career Episode Civil Essay Career Episode 3 a) Introduction This career episode describes my working activity from September till October 2xxx. I was working as a group leader at the design of water-supply and sewerage works and networks of the FFF Bauxite Mine and of a town situated in Komi Autonomous Republic. b) Background. After reviewing the background data I had to define water-supply sources, to calculate water consumption for domestic, industrial and fire safety purposes of the mine industrial area and the town. I also had to estimate sewage runoff and to select appropriate water and sewerage works. I had to foresee the measures devoted to environmental protection. As usual I closely collaborated with relative specialists- prospecting specialists, electrical engineers, water engineers and metallurgical specialists. For this design I carried out all the necessary calculations, developed the principal main water-supply and sewerage works schemes, water consumption and water removal balance schemes. All the calculations were carried out on a computer. While I was working on the project I took part in the negotiations with the customer, where we discussed the engineering and environmental protection problems. After completing my work I gave the explanatory note to my customer for approval. c) Personal workplace activity. For this design I studied a lot of materials which contained the information about hydrological, geological and climatic parameters of the designed industrial site area. I analysed accounts of preliminary and detailed groundwater prospecting for household water-supply. The careful study of this information made it possible for me to offer the disposition of water-intake works ( artesian wells ) not at the place recommended at the reliminary prospecting. That fact excluded the possibility of chemical and bacterial contamination of the water supply source. I carried out the calculations of water consumption for domestic, industrial and fire safety needs. On the basis of these calculations I developed the water-supply scheme. This scheme was as follows: Water from the water-intake wells is distributed by the pumps to the regulating reservoirs intended for the water collectin g before the pumping station of the second raising. The pumps at the pumping station of the second raising discharge water from the regulating reservoirs to the reservoirs where fire-proof, emergency and controlling reserve of water is kept. From the reservoirs the water flows under gravity to the circular network. I made provision for a special installation of the regulating valves with the electric drive in the wells near the tanks in order to pass the fire safety reserve of water. In this project I made an important decision regarding environmental protection. I offered to disinfect potable water at the bactericidal plants. Besides, I foresaw the reserved disinfection of water with the solution of natrium hypochlorite obtained from the solution of salt in the electrolyses. For this design we (my group under my direction) worked out the borders of sanitary protection zones for water-supply sources and water storage tanks. We kept in view the further development of our object. We also included all the sanitary steps around the zone territory according to the construction standards and rules. On the industrial areas of the mine I designed the recycling water supply systems for a diesel power station, for a crushed stone factory and for a car-washer. I estimated and selected the following works and networks of the recycling water supply systems: recycling water-supply pumping stations, water-cooling towers, car-washer sewage water treatment plants, recycling water pipe-lines. These recycling water supply systems allowed to reduce fresh water consumption. The recycling water supply systems make 92 percent of the whole mine water-supply in this design. I also calculated the following sewerage systems: household, industrially-storm and industrial ones. For the household sewerage system I estimated and selected sewerage pumping stations, domestic sewage treatment plants, sewerage networks. At the disposal works waste water passes step by step the intake chamber, the racks, the grit catchers and then enters the mixing chamber. The aluminium sulphate solution and chlorine water are fed there to improve oxidising of ammonia nitrogen. Then sewage enters the sedimentation tank, where settling takes place to separate the main part of pollutants. In order to remove residual organic pollutants and unsettled suspended matter the further sewage treatment goes on by the oxidation on the surface of the pores filter bed. Treated sewage water enters the contact chamber for the disinfection. In my explanatory note I gave the description of all the sewerage works and represented the tables of pollutants concentrations in household sewage before and after the purification. I also represented the results of the suspended matter and biological oxygen demand ( BOD ) sewage purification degree design taking into account the process of the mixing with water of the river, in which sewage is discharged after purification. Disposal works which I have selected ensure household sewage purification up to the maximum concentration limits that in turn permit to discharge sewage into basins important for fish industry. I also made provision for storm water treatment. Storm water full of black oil from the territory of lubricating materials storehouse, from a car park and garage, sewage from the repair shops enter the storm water treatment plants. Here sedimentation and purification take place on the filters. After purification storm water isn’t discharged into the basin but it is utilised in the hydraulic ash removal system of the boiler house and partly used to fill the recycling water supply systems of HPP ( heating power plant ). I also designed the second sewage utilisation for the industrial sewerage system. Sewage from the hydro-washing of the floors of crushed stone factory and of grinding-sorting factory enters the pumping station and then the sewage flows to the ash dump of HPP to fill the recycling water supply systems. In this project I had to solve the problem of the FFF bauxite mine quarry water treatment working together with the water engineer and the specialist of our institute scientific research department. I provided for the sewage treatment and the sewage discharge into the river belonging to the fish-industry basins of the extra quality, where the pollutants content was carefully controlled by the present legislation. The mine quarry water is a mixture of treated industrial water and water pumped from the mine underground roadways. The water is generally polluted by the suspended matter and the oil products. First the quarry water flows into the sedimentation tank. In the sedimentation tank the averaging of seasonal movements of water consumption and the partial suspended matter sedimentation takes place. To achieve the required purification degree I developed the process flow sheet with the reagent water treatment and the following filtration. The flow sheet includes: The suspended matter treatment in the sedimentation tank with natrium aluminate as a coagulant. Filtration. The pollutants content after the purification meets the specifications of the maximum permissible concentrations of the controlled components for fishing basins. To achieve the required purification degree I provided for the centralised control of the process, the automatic adjustment of the parameters and the analytic control of the quality of influents and effluents. To ensure reliable work and optimal sanitary-engineering conditions all the reservoirs equipment is provided by the special devices. These devices give warning signals if the limiting value is achieved. All the equipment and all the pipe-lines which are exposed to the aggressive medium acting are protected by the special corrosion proof coverage. d) Summary. In this design many tasks and problems were accomplished. They are closely connected with water-supply, water draining, sewage treatment, environmental protection of the designed object. How to Spot the Scorpius Constellation

How to Spot the Scorpius Constellation The Scorpius constellation glitters against the backdrop of the Milky Way. It has a curvy S-shaped body ending in a set of claws at the head and a pair of stinger stars at the tail. Both northern and southern hemisphere stargazers can see it, although it will look upside down when observed from below the equator. Finding Scorpius Constellation Northern hemisphere summer skies, looking south. Carolyn Collins Petersen In the northern hemisphere, Scorpius is most visible by looking to the south during July and August around 10:00 PM. The constellation remains visible until mid-September. In the southern hemisphere, Scorpio appears very high in the northern part of the sky until close to the end of September. Scorpius has a distinctive shape and thus is fairly easy to spot. Simply look for an S-shaped pattern of stars between the constellations Libra (the scales) and Sagittarius, and below another constellation called Ophiuchus.   History of Scorpius Scorpius has long been recognized as a constellation. Its roots in mythology stretch back to the ancient Babylonians and Chinese, as well as Hindu astrologers and Polynesian navigators. The Greeks associated it with the constellation Orion, and today we often hear the tale of how both constellations are never seen together in the sky. Thats because, in the ancient legends, the scorpion stung Orion, killing him. Keen observers will notice that Orion sets in the east as the scorpion rises, and the two will never  meet.  Ã‚   The Stars of the Scorpius Constellation The official IAU constellation of Scorpius shows the boundaries of the entire region that contains the S-shaped pattern of the scorpion. IAU/Sky Publishing At least 18 bright stars make up the curving body of the starry scorpion. The larger region of Scorpius is defined by the I boundaries set by the International Astronomical Union. These were made by international agreement and allow astronomers to use common references for stars and other objects in all areas of the sky. Within that region, Scorpius has dozens of stars that can be seen with the naked eye, and part of it lies against the backdrop of the Milky Way with its countless stars and clusters.   Each star in Scorpius has a Greek letter next to it in the official star chart. The alpha (ÃŽ ±) denotes the brightest star, beta (ÃŽ ²) the second-brightest star, and so on. The brightest star in Scorpius is ÃŽ ± Scorpii, with the common name of Antares (meaning the rival of Ares (Mars). Its a red supergiant star and is one of the largest stars we can see in the sky. It lies about 550 light-years away from us. If Antares were part of our solar system, it would encompass the inner solar system out beyond the orbit of Mars. Antares is traditionally thought of as the heart of the scorpion and is easy to spot with the naked eye.   Scorpius (upper right) along with Sagittarius (lower left). Notice how the Milky Way makes a backdrop for the two star patterns. The object marked Sag A* is the location of the black hole at the heart of our galaxy. Carolyn Collins Petersen The second-brightest star in Scorpius is actually a triple-star system. The brightest member is called Graffias (alternatively its also called Acrab) and its official designation is ÃŽ ²1 Scorpii. Its two companions are much fainter but can be seen in telescopes. Down at the tail end of Scorpius lies a pair of stars colloquially known as the stingers. The brighter of the two is called gamma Scorpii, or Shaula. The other stinger is called Lesath.   Deep Sky Objects in Constellation Scorpius A selection of deep-sky objects awaits stargazers who search the skies in Scorpius and Sagittarius. Its a great area of the sky to study with binoculars or small telescopes. Carolyn Collins Petersen   Scorpius is on the plane of the Milky Way. Its stinger stars point roughly toward the center of our galaxy, which means that observers can spot many star clusters and nebulae in the region. Some are visible to the naked eye, while others are best observed with binoculars or telescopes. Due to its location near the heart of the galaxy, Scorpius has a fine collection of globular clusters, marked here by yellow circles with symbols inside them. The easiest cluster to spot is called M4. There are also many open clusters in Scorpius, such as NGC 6281, that can be seen with binoculars or small telescopes. Closeup of M4 Globular clusters are satellites of the Milky Way galaxy. They often contain hundreds, thousands, or sometimes millions of stars, all tightly bound together by gravity. M4 orbits the core of the Milky Way and lies about 7,200 light-years away from the Sun. It has around 100,000 ancient stars more than 12 billion years old. This means they were born when the universe was quite young and existed before the Milky Galaxy was formed. Astronomers study these clusters, and in particular, the metal content of their stars to understand more about them.   The globular cluster Messier 4 (M4) lies not too far from the bright star Antares in Scorpius. Carolyn Collins Petersen   For amateur observers, M4 is easy to spot, not far from Antares. From a good dark-sky sight, its just bright enough to be picked out with the naked eye. However, its much easier to observe through binoculars. A good backyard-type telescope will show a very nice view of the cluster.

CAMPAIGNS AND ELECTIONS Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

CAMPAIGNS AND ELECTIONS - Essay Example Their contribution leveled off the deficit in hard money collection. The difference in soft money collection between the two parties, however, was insignificant. The Republicans hard money figures doubled the Democrats figures since 1987 to 2002. The gap narrowed in the year 2003. During the period between 2009 and 2010, democrats raised more hard money compared to Republicans. For the period between 2011 and 2012, the figures were relatively equal (Center for Responsive Politics 1). Soft money figures for Republicans were slightly higher Democrats’ figures over the years. The PACs gave to both the parties ,it is noted that at no instant the percentage contributions to the Democrats is a hundred percent, this shows that even the republicans had a share however little it was. The Democrats did better than Republicans did because the party preference expanded. Growth in party emanated from the public perception of poor job performance by the incumbent republican president. The Iraq war in addition to the federal response by the incumbent to Hurrican Katrinan also explains the reason for the low contribution

Nursing-Prevention of Pressure Ulcer Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

Nursing-Prevention of Pressure Ulcer - Essay Example Prevention of pressure ulcer can be considered as such a topic which is concerned with multiple specialties. Reason behind the choice of topic: A pressure ulcer is a skin area that that would break down as the patient stays in a constant position for too long. Since there is no shift of body weight in certain cases of maladies, irregularity in blood supply may take place in the area of the body under pressure leading to pressure ulcer (Bluestein & Javaheri, 2008). Pressure ulcer (also called bedsore or decubitus ulcer) can be seen in a variety of patients. From patients who have diabetes to those who have Alzheimer’s disease, pressure ulcers may be diagnosed. Therefore, while discussing pressure ulcers, there is a scope to discuss its occurrence in relation with a variety of diseases. Moreover, today in the urban society, hospitals are coming across increased number of accident cases (particularly, the road accidents). Pressure ulcers are often found in patients who have serious problems in mobility, especially due to various accidents. The problem is thus becoming comparatively com mon and deserves attention in the field of nursing. How the topic relates to the workplace: As a nurse in a nursing home or hospital, adequate knowledge of pressure ulcers may prove to be a basic requirement in the case of caring older adults and accident victims in particular. â€Å"Part of a nurse’s work is to assist patients with their physical, spiritual, and social needs if patients are unable to satisfy these needs on their own. Hygiene and skin condition, including nutritional balance, are significant factors in preventing pressure ulcers† (Romanelli et al, 2006). In today’s urban society, increased number of older adults with impaired mobility is leading to larger number of patients with pressure ulcers. Moreover, accident victims too may face the problem of these ulcers in the course of long treatment. Preventing pressure ulcers thus becomes one of the most

With in 15 work days of receipt of the request, the receiving official will issue a written response to either uphold the performance, evaluation rating or direct that the evaluation be revised The one year contract between Span System and C-S is $6 million. This is C-S bigger e-CRM order in the pipeline, and the chances of Span System to getting the order lies in the contract performance. Leon Ther, the IT outsourcing director, is an influential personality, is one among the top negotiator of C-S. Span. After eight months of the project, problems started to set in. Spans deliverables have been behind schedule of the last couple of months. In the manner of quality, C-S had detected that the quality of the deliverables are unacceptable , or of low quality. Leon Ther, addressing his letter to Kevin Grant, he said that C-S can nit afford to have schedule slips due to its deadline for the release of a transaction software in the market. Leon Ther had no other alternative but to ask for the immediate transfer of all unfinished code and asserter rescission of the contract by C-S. Problems at both ends are now arising. The user and the system have now grown since the determination of the study in the planning stage, thus making it difficult for the accommodation of the agreed upon and cost and the timelines. Since the ordinary requirement changes had been agreed to in the contract, the actual change had been ordinary. Due to C-S change in its project management structure, the approval and review times had been affected. Neither of the two parties may cancel the agreement, it is because subsequent to more than 50% of the consideration having been tendered by the other. Since more than 505 of the project schedule had elapsed, C-s may not rescind the contract. Mere

Women In The Military Essay Example for Free

Women In The Military Essay Women in the military has been a controversial topic for many years now, and the roles they play in the armed services. In this paper I will discuss the roles women have occupied, and if they should be allowed to participate on the front lines in war. This has been a topic receiving more attention as the years progress. It used to be never customary for women to be involved in war in any way, but as civil rights has been more of an issue so has women going to war. The women want to be equal to men, but the question is can they handle doing what the men can do on the front lines. It is well known women provide good services and do a fine jobs working up the ranks in the military. They have grown in numbers and have gained more respect in recent years by using their knowledge and skills. However, they are still not prevalent in mass numbers during fighting in battles of war. I will try to balance out the positives and negatives of this topic then give my personal opinion on this widely discussed issue. It has been longed believed that men are suppose to be the warriors and the ones who fight to protect his family or country. That has been the basic theory for all the past years, so the women had no influence on war at all. Even back in the civil war days women had no part in the war in any way. They were expected to take care of the kids and the house hold has the men went off to fight. They did not even realize what was really going on, because they had knowledge how war was fought. This has been the way because of womens physical characteristics. In general women are not as big or strong as men, so they have been considered weak and not able to battle. For the maturity of women compared to men that is a true statement. They do not have the physical size, strength, or speed as men do for the most part. There are always exceptions, but for maturity that is a basic fact. The physical characteristic differences in women from men defiantly play a major part in them not fighting in the front the lines. When people go to war they carry extremely heavy backpacks on their backs all the time. Those backpacks are how they survive in the times they are not near their bases. Those packs are also very heavy along with all the clothes they have to wear as well. Most women could not travel with those packs on there backs for to long with out becoming fatigue then naturally slowing the group the down. The military eliminates men or women that would slow them down in battle, because time is of essence. The women would also have a hard time handling the guns the military uses. They use heavy machinery and powerful weapons that are difficult to handle. It is not an easy job to hold a gun in place when it kicks back every time the trigger is pulled. Most women would just become too fatigued, since there physical characteristics are not equal to men, so that therefore would be a negative affect with women on the front lines. The number of women in the armed forces has grown dramatically since World War II. During WWII women were mostly nurses so were suppose to take care of men. However, as America went deeper into the war, the women needed to play greater roles. They were called on to work in factories to build the weapons needed, and take more responsibilities in the medical teams. After WWII of course the civil rights movement started to grow stronger for more women rights. Women felt they could be more than just a housewife or a nurse. Some women went into the working field, while others wanted to be in the military. By the time the Gulf War started in the early 1990s there were numerous amounts of women in all areas of the armed forces. Women proved themselves to be disciplined and tough in the military, as well as sources of knowledge. Women think about things and see some situations differently than men. They can bring a new perspective to things, which helps develop better strategies in war. Women now have high ranks in all the armed forces and help protect America as well as any man. Women are also a lot more emotional than men are. This is another reason why women shouldnt be in the military, especially during times of war. They could not fight being all emotional. Once again for the maturity men can put on a tougher face and do the job without worrying what they are doing, while they are doing it. It is not an easy task for any sane person to kill someone or watch someone die without having some sort of emotion. However, they have to look past that for the time being or they could be in danger for letting there guard down. It is much more likely for women to care too much about the people dieing next to them when it happens. The group has to be willing to let that person go and continue at the task at hand. For the most part men can look past that persons death, without having to cry or worry about it while there still fighting. Most women could not handle what occurs in war. Womens numbers in the military has increased a lot because they have one many civil rights battles, and the fact there are a number of jobs available in the military other than actual combat. The military needs more to be successful than just good fighters. More jobs have opened up since the advancing technology and number of people in the military. The military offers excellent educational opportunities and other jobs such as engineers, scientists, doctors, lawyers, journalist, writers, accountants, and etcetera. With all those different jobs needed in the military in some way, there has been a lot of openings. Women can achieve just as good education or better than men, and have the opportunity to acquire those jobs. This benefits the military greatly because there is a variety, which can only help increase brain power. Traditionally through out time women are not supposed to fight in war. Women were thought of to never have what it takes to be a warrior in the eyes of men. They were not as big, strong, fast, or smart was the theory. Even Aristotle and Plato developed theories how women did not have enough courage or virtue to be able to fight. They felt they lacked that killer instinct. Basically, it has just been custom for men to battle and be the provider and for the women to take care of the home. Times are changing where women are equal to men, but it is hard to break something that has held true for so many years. Another positive to women fighting though is it increases the number of people. In theory if there are more people on one side chances are they are going to win the war. The army could just out number the opponent, so they could just dominate that way. It would be more intimating to fight with a lot more people than normal, and the enemy would be more likely to back down. Also something holds true about the saying safety in numbers. It is never good to have soldiers killed in battle, but the more people you have the more people you can afford to loose without being overrun by lack of numbers. Throughout this paper I have shown some of the positive and negative aspects of women in the military, especially women going into war. After researching this topic I have developed my own opinion on this issue. I now believe women are needed in the military to perform several jobs, but I do not feel they should be in battle. There are a number of opportunities to take advantage of in the military, where one will never have to go to war. People can work with intelligence agencies, on the medical staff, scientists, or professional jobs such as doctors, lawyers, or journalists. Women can filll the need for these jobs and others just as well as a man could. However, I believe in the traditional thinking that women should not be in battle. I also dont think they have the physical capabilities to handle war. There are some that could, but war is too physically and emotionally demanding for the maturity of women to handle.

Formal Analysis of Hawthornes Young Goodman Brown Essay -- Young Good

A Formal Analysis of Young Goodman Brown Nathaniel Hawthorne's "Young Goodman Brown" is an interesting short story that creatively tells two stories at once. One story is of a man leaving his wife one night and venturing into the woods, and the other is of his struggle with his religious faith. In reading this story, it is beneficial for one to look at it from a formalistic point of view. Formal analysis makes the reader look closely at how a story is written to see its deeper meaning. Hawthorne takes advantage of careful word choice and images to create a picture of one man's journey that can easily parallel our own. The word choice of every story plays a key role in understanding the story. In "Young Goodman Brown" almost every word contains a special meaning. The title Hawthorne gives to his story is simple and informative; it tells the reader right away that the focus of the story is a young man. The use of the name Brown is also significant. The name is universal so that it can relate to anyone (Rhetoric 102L class discussion, January 15 2001). The fact that his title is Goodman, instead of Mister, suggests that it took place around colonial times. The name of his wife, Faith, is a clue held in the opening paragraph of the text that gives the reader and idea of what the story is about. Though out the story Goodman Brown says phrases such as, "Faith kept me back a while," which on the surface looks as though he is talking about his wife; however just below the surface he is talking about how his faith in God that kept him from heading towards the Devil. (HCAL 376). Caref... ...odman Brown goes is also significant. The Puritans believed that the witches and even the Devil lived in the woods, which can be a hint foreshadowing what Goodman Brown will find in the forest. "Young Goodman Brown" is full of carefully selected words. Each place, item, and name described is significant to the story. The word, faith, has two functions, a name and a belief. Images such as the pink ribbons and the staff are useful for more than their everyday function. Hawthorne knows the power of words and chooses wisely, thus creating a story that, when looked at beyond the surface, has a completely new meaning. - (Guerin, Wilfered; Labor, Earle; Morgan, Lee; Reesman, Jeanne; Willingham, John, A Handbook of Critical Appraches to Literature, New York, Oxford University Press, 1999.)
